Twin TBirds

Spot the difference…

Just before Christmas, the Cranksters held their Christmas Picnic at Whiteman Park – the deciding factor being the onsite Car Museum, but the guys said it was because there was a swimming pool. It was about 40degrees and poor Santa suffered in his polyester suit.

Anyway, the Museum holds a match to our 1957 Dusk Rose Thunderbird, and despite urban legend that the 2 cars have never been sighted together (much the same as LaToya and Michael Jackson), they are different cars! The Whiteman Park Tbird was owned by Paul Terry, a WA entrepeneur who passed away some years ago. Our Tbird was imported from the States by our friend Tony sometime last decade.

Actually, the cars have been in the same room before, as our mechanic will attest. We once booked the Tbird in for repairs and the Terry Tbird was already in the garage! That was slightly weird.

Tbirds Xmas Meet and Eat

Thunderbirds Floreat

Overnight rain and cloudy weather did not deter our regular breakfast gang from meeting today, Sunday December 5th, at The Kiosk Floreat Beach carpark for our Christmas meet and eat.

The rain stayed away, and mechanical hitches kept a few friends from joining in, but the rest of us had more than enough caffeine and carbs to fuel us through the morning. Apparently one person (who shall remain anonymous) will be telling his wife he had fruit salad with lo-fat yoghurt and a green tea (right!).

Rob (who may or may not be the abovementioned) had an issue with his spoke-balancing (I may not have that right, being a girl), so he hitched a ride with Boris in the Firebird while Rachel raced in with her fab 66 Alfa Duetto (they parked a respectful distance away from the Tbirds). We also met Canadians Yvonne and Harvey who showed us photos of their Tbird back home.

Doc’s 66 Tbird convertible arrived late but in style after a flat tyre incident.

This weekend was the annual 2010 WA Hot Rod Show at Burswood.
Unfortunately, no Tbirds there this year, but luckily I met with Tony’s 1965 Roadster just around the corner here in Floreat. Nice!

The “Battlebird”

1957 Ford Tbird Battlebird

Coming up at RM Auctions on Thursday 12th August is the last remaining ‘Battlebird’.

The Battlebirds were experimental, highly-modified, 1957 Thunderbirds, which made extensive use of weight-saving aluminium to replace many steel body panels. They were specially constructed to race the famed ‘flying mile’ speed runs at Daytona Beach in 1957.
2 Battlebirds were constructed for these show races, after which they were sold off by the Ford Motor Company.

This car, No. 98, originally ran a fuel-injected, McCullough supercharged 312 engine, and ran second to a Ferrari. It was restored painstakingly by Gil Baumgartner in the early 2000s. Check out Gil’s restoration here.

No. 99, powered by a 368 Lincoln engine, was later destroyed.

So if you want to lay some rubber down your street, here’s your chance to place a bid.

NEWS JUST IN: The Battlebird sold for US$280,000. (No, my wife didn’t buy it for my birthday.)

Larry Watson R.I.P.

Sadly, Larry Watson passed away on July 20th, a day before his 72nd birthday.
The Custom painter supremo, who created the ‘panel painting’ style most famously on his brand new ’58 T-Bird, will be sadly missed by his fans and admirers.
No doubt there will be plenty of ‘Watson-style’ tribute cars appearing in the future.
RIP Larry.

4th of July Down Under

Here on the underside of the world, it’s usually raining for 4th of July celebrations. But this year the weather gods didn’t dampen the party, and a big crowd of our U.S. pals turned up at Kardinya (just south of Perth) for the annual A.W.C. Fair. If the hot dogs, popcorn, donuts, candy, Millers and salsa sauce didn’t stir up the homesickness, the bouncy castle sure would.

Rumours that Elvis arrived in the big ole ‘Tupelo’ Cadillac were eventually dispelled… but it would have explained the ‘sold out’ sign at the Krispy Kreme counter.

Paul and I waited in line for a hotdog, and dressed in patriotic colours for the occasion. We even affixed a U.S. flag to the back aerial, embassy-style. Happy Birthday Uncle Sam.

Snaps of Tbirds, Mustangs, Cadillacs, Jeeps and assorted sights here.
